We’re thrilled to celebrate a major milestone in our Combat Systems Engineering Micro-credentials program: our first cohort has completed their professional upskilling journey with 15 learners, over half the cohort, successfully finishing all six micro-credentials.
That’s more than 300 hours of university-level study completed alongside demanding professional roles, which is an incredible achievement in lifelong learning and defence capability development.
These micro-credentials, developed in partnership with Lockheed Martin Australia, offer a flexible, industry-led pathway into the specialised field of Combat Systems Engineering. Learners gain hands-on experience with technologies like radar, sonar, and control systems, all critical to Australia’s defence platforms.
Travis Hunt, instructor of the final module Fundamentals of Mission Engineering and a leader at UNSW Canberra’s Capability Systems Centre, praised the program’s impact: “The Defence Trailblazer Combat System Engineering micro-credentials are an excellent selection of topics for any engineer working in the defence industry who does not have a background in defence. The combination of hard technical knowledge through subjects like Military Effectors is balanced by learning the higher-level principles of how military forces carry out their operations using Command and Control. The addition of Mission Engineering provides a culminating subject that brings together Command and Control, System Engineering, and technical knowledge to consider complex missions and how their work as Combat Systems Engineers contributes to broader outcomes. The students from this cohort took up the Mission Engineering course with a high level of enthusiasm and professionalism.”
This initiative is helping close a vital skills gap in Australia’s defence sector by equipping defence industry professionals and technical specialists with the expertise to design, integrate, and maintain the systems that support today’s land, sea, and air forces, as well as the next generation of nuclear-powered submarines.
