Gallery: Commercialisation & Collaboration Masterclass – Sydney

Defence Trailblazer hosted its final Commercialisation & Collaboration Masterclass for 2025 in Sydney on 29 October, bringing together university researchers, PhD candidates, and professional staff for a dynamic half-day session. The event focused on the practical realities of commercialising university research and building effective collaborations with industry.

Held in person, the masterclass fostered open dialogue across disciplines and career stages, with participants engaging in expert-led discussions that unpacked the complexities of translating academic research into commercial outcomes.

Key themes included the importance of mutual understanding between academia and industry, the role of university support systems such as tech transfer offices, and the need for clear communication with investors throughout the commercialisation journey. Attendees gained practical insights into IP ownership, venture capital pathways, and the balance between publishing and profit.

The Sydney session marked the conclusion of a two-year masterclass series that featured eight events covering topics such as IP policies, commercialisation pathways, and publishing industry-funded research. The series has helped equip researchers with the tools and knowledge to navigate the commercialisation landscape and strengthen university-industry partnerships.
